Airstreamer 03:27
AIRSTREAMER airstreamer, playing cards drinking whiskey, living large on summer break while the Talking Heads are playing low while we think about girls from back home and how we love them now skip ahead to ‘99, New York City blind on wine and on my own i don’t remember what you said, but i remember how you said it it broke my heart we’re all going to the same place he just beat us there that’s all we’re all going to this other place where nothing escapes from but you don’t have to be scared of it anymore the way you feel, i know it i was there some time ago nothing you hear will help you you just have to learn how to save yourself how to save yourself from a distant love

MARCH FOR MILES i wish i was there with you in your twenties when cars were made of steel and wheat was on the penny on a sunny day you could see for miles our boys were off to war they would march for miles i wish i was there when you were looking smooth they marched you all day and made you so tired on a sunny day you could see for miles and our boys were off to war they would march for miles and you came straight from the war i wish i was there with you in your twenties when cars were made of steel and wheat was on the penny on a sunny day you could see for miles our boys were off to war they would march for miles the air was fresh and sweet they would dream of coming home and think, ‘man, i hope she waits for me’ while you sit there all by your lonesome self

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MAN took a ride by myself tonight i’ve always liked this time of night my thoughts take me down a darker road i do my best not to let it get out of control and it’s alright, you didn’t listen to yourself it’s alright, it’s hard to hear over the noise now i’m back where i want to be underneath my family tree i’ll dig a moat and fill it up with fire around our rented castle on the south side of town it’s alright, i didn’t listen to myself it’s alright, it’s hard to hear over the noise you live your life like an open book don’t get so mad when i take a look i go back and forth with you my friend on what exactly it means to be a man i don't know it’s alright, i didn’t listen to myself it’s alright, it’s hard to hear over the noise so don’t quit don’t give up on your dream ‘cause if you break you’ll never know exactly what it means it’s alright, you didn’t listen to yourself it’s alright, it’s hard to hear over the noise

OLD RODRIGUEZ Old Rodriguez doesn’t look so hot he doesn’t come around anymore and he sleeps all the time he went back to the war in the South Pacific Islands he flew in gliders at night and watched the natives for their warning sign that’s my grandad he lived a century long and towards the end there he traveled back in time he went back to the ranch and reconnected with his old man he worked the fields in the day then home to dinner with his mother then there are the ones that go too soon we live in the silence of their wake and i know we’ll be there soon but in the silence of their wake is where we live i wonder if he ever heard about ever heard about cargo cults if i could i would’ve asked him myself did you ever hear of cargo cults

Landlocked 03:17
LANDLOCKED you slept down by the pond said you felt landlocked and that the water was still that made everything clear you asked me to move away mentioned something about Colorado with a house on a ridge maybe talk about kids what have you done with the hit and run you left a lady dead now that blood’s on your hands i stood out on the porch listening for the sirens and when they never came i thought maybe you got away i thought about your mom i thought about your brothers i wonder what they’ll do now that you’re all gone what have you done with the hit and run they’re going to track you down ‘cause it’s all around town take it from me he is going to let you down was the thing i remember your mom told me once i thought she was full of it until you proved her right with all your goodbyes so goodbye forever so you asked me to move away mentioned something about Colorado build a house on a ridge maybe talk about kids what have you done with the hit and run they’re going to track you down ‘cause it’s all around town you left a lady dead now that blood’s on your hands ain’t nothing we can do except go on

Highway 59 02:53
HIGHWAY 59 one day you’re gonna get some time to yourself without all this bullshit around and something you’ll have to ask yourself when you get there how will you drown out the sound of your entire life sounds like a hollering baby stuck in a parking lot highway 59, baby now my friends say how come we don’t see you around i miss those days when you would act like a clown what do you say we go out and drink a few beers i said no, man i haven’t done that in years my entire life i’ve been a hollering baby stuck in a parking lot highway 59, baby so one day you’re gonna get some time to yourself without all this bullshit around one day you’re gonna find you take what you want leave the rest where you found it

WAVING THROUGH THE WINDOW you got something with your eyes and we don’t pay no mind to that i kiss your golden hair and watched you run free now someone’s got a plan and we don’t understand that at least we have each other that goes a long way you waving through the window is hard for me to see you racing up the sidewalk makes it tough to keep on driving i got something in the works just haven’t heard a word back it’s hard to feel like a man in such poverty what if that someone with the plan never shows his hand to us at least we have each other that goes a long, long way you waving through the window is hard for me to see you racing up the sidewalk makes it tough to keep on driving you got something with your eyes but we don’t pay no mind to that i kiss your golden hair and watch you run free you waving through the window is hard for me to see you racing up the sidewalk makes it tough to keep on driving i’m gonna get us out of this if it brings me to my knees i’m gonna get us out of this but i’ve got to keep on trying

NIGHTFALL SEATTLE nightfall Seattle the water made pale by the light it was a painting we owned in the eighties that made the room take on that time of night at the same time, Corpus Christi the first time a girl caught my eye then her dad took a job on the east coast he moved the family along with my heart on that day i met sorrow from a girl i only spoke to maybe twice and the same with that painting for turning my days into nights the age of dirt bikes and metal when the skateboarders took to the sky it was the year we split up the family to create this new way of life on that day i met sorrow from a girl i only spoke to maybe twice and the same with that painting for turning my days into nights here comes love… nightfall Seattle the water made pale by the light it was a painting we owned in the eighties that made the room take on that time of night and on that day i met sorrow from a girl i only spoke to maybe twice and the same with that painting for turning my days into nights here comes love…

DO YOU EVER GET THE FEELING do you ever get the feeling this life ain’t your game you were born at the wrong time can’t seem to find your way do you ever get the feeling you’re a relic from the past find it hard to keep up with the pace of modern life or how about the feeling when there’s no hope or help in sight or that you’re letting down your family on a dream that won’t take flight do you struggle with the hours do you battle through the days do you find it hard to keep up with a life that ain’t your game you know when i hold your hand i love the difference in color makes me proud to be your man it never occurred to me that i’m in line for something else did i miss it like a road sign was i even looking out the thought of moving back to Houston the thought of living with my folks was enough to get us thinking about doing something else you know when i hold your hand i love the difference in color makes me proud to be your man i know i don’t hold you right ‘cause i’m half of what i used to be and that other half ain’t right only half of what i use to be and the other half ain’t right

about

Tody Castillo has been a performing songwriter for almost two decades. The material from two previous albums, his solid eponymous 2005 release and the superb Windhorse from 2008, covered traditional songwriter’s ground – love, loss, and struggle. With a storyteller’s nuance and a designer’s eye for detail, each song revealed depths of feeling and meaning. With this year’s new album Old Rodriguez, Tody Castillo has sharpened his best weapon. Adding a decade of married fatherhood to his growing list of accomplishments, there’s undeniable weight to his vocals, new grit that before was only hinted at.

“This album is about reflection, growth, time, becoming a parent, and coming of age. It also looks back at a veteran’s journey through WWII touching on the experience of being away, coming home, and later flashing back through a life well lived. It’s also a realization that above all things, ‘time’ is more important than the hustle.”

Old Rodriguez is set for release on April 8, 2022 via Strolling Bones Records.
